In our daily life there are many situations where we assume we are safe. When we go visit a restaurant or fast-food place, we may assume that all will be okay. Typically, we can sit down for a bite to eat without feeling we are in danger. Reality is we never know when protection is needed. Anything can happen anywhere and our safety and security may be at risk in situations; we never imagined. This has become more and more apparent in recent times.
Recently, a woman was assaulted randomly at a McDonald’s in downtown Vancouver. A male had been attempting to get into the washroom. The washroom was occupied so obviously the door was locked. The male then, being frustrated, became violent and started kicking the door. He also ended up throwing his coffee in the process, hitting another customer. At this point a woman asked him to leave, the male punched the female in response. The male also had a knife which was later discovered.
Luckily, a local man stepped in and took the aggressor to the ground. He then let him up and pushed his cart out the door. It was a very brave thing for this man to do. Two police officers were nearby and took over at this point. It was very fortunate for the lady and all the customers that this man stepped in and that police were close enough to take over quickly. Realistically this situation could have escalated much more if the police had not been nearby. All involved are obviously happy now that they were safe.
An even better situation would be if there had been trained security guards on site. Trained security guards can asses the situation and respond appropriately. The guard would be on the lookout for problematic people and watch to see what they are up to. In this case the guard could have intervened before any customer’s involvement. If the male was violent, the guard could have called emergency services and police could have responded quickly if officers were not near by. The trained security guard could also keep the area clear of customers as best as possible until police arrive for everyone’s safety. As well the guard would be trained to look out for dangerous situations and be ready in case things started going badly. The sooner the police is notified; the sooner all will be safe again.
A guard on the property means a quick assessment and a quick contact to the police or any emergency services that are required. At the very least the guard or guards could help keep the public separated from the danger until help arrives.
