If you want to work in the security industry, apart from license, some training is also required. This is needed if you want to work with Red Mark Security. Before you ever set foot on a security site you will need to complete BST training; otherwise known as Basic Security Training. This program was created by the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
Introduced in the late 1990’s this program was originally a 9-day program. The first five days was all security theory. The second week was physical training and self defense. After some years of development, the program switched to a 5-day; 40-hour program. This is the program that is in place now.
What sort of subjects are covered in the course training?
The following are some of the topics covered:
Professionalism and Ethics
While working in the security industry you will have access to confidential information and restricted access areas that are off limit to the public. This part of the course will discuss the elements of acting like a professional in this job and the ethics involved. At times you will even have access to things that can’t even be mentioned to co-workers. This training will instruct you on what expectations are in place for security officers to perform their duties ethically and with the utmost professionalism.
Legal Studies
This part of the course goes in depth on the law as it applies to security. It covers the legal issues that can come up with trespass, the charter of rights and freedoms, dealing with minors and how that varies in comparison with dealing with adults as far as the law goes. This is designed to protect you as a security officer. The more you know about the law as it applies to you job as a security officer the safer you will be.
Report Writing
An important part of security guard training and an activity that you will be engaged in daily is report writing. While working you will be documenting your activities on a daily and hourly basis. This is important as there may come a time that your reports and notebook writing could be used in court. Knowing how to write a informative, concise but complete reports of your shift and most importantly incidents that happen on site is vital to be an effective security guard and this part of the course will teach you the skills you need.
Personal Safety:
This is most likely the most important part of the training. Maintaining your personal safety is vital for several reasons. For starters no job is worth injury or even death. We all want to go home at the end of the day. This training will teach you how to keep yourself safe. You can’t keep the public safe if you aren’t safe yourself.
This security guard training will give you the skills you will need to get started in the security industry. Further training will come on site or through company programs but this is starting point to your career.
